synopsis

Naked red-haired delivery boys drive an infinite inescapable chain of production and consumption. Following one boy throughout the system, Honeyboys is an artistic and allegorical descent into an estranging landscape of exploitation and desire.
It challenges us to reflect on our place in the world, confronting us with our own complicity in a system we oppose and depend on in equal measure.

Main Creator’s Statement

With Honeyboys, we wanted to test and push the technical and creative workflow, and the philosophy we had taught ourselves over the past eight years. We wanted to see whether it could hold up in a longer format of 36 minutes, without losing the narrative structure of the work or the attention of the audience. It became the most difficult and rewarding project we have ever created. Along the way, we learned more about the nature of VR, and about the strengths and limitations of the medium, than we could have anticipated. The process forced us to confront our own assumptions about what makes a good VR experience. Honeyboys is not intended as a narrative vehicle, but as an experience in the purest sense of the word. It reflects on a world that seems to be growing colder and more cruel, where systems of consumption and exploitation feel increasingly inescapable, without becoming too moralistic. The creation of this work also made us reflect on our own place within those systems. We hope the audience will find a similar space for reflection. We are sad that the journey of creating this experience has come to an end, but we are wholeheartedly looking forward to audiences encountering it for the first time.
