Kasia earns her living by breaking into apartments with her boyfriend. During one of their break-ins, she discovers the body of a man who has committed suicide. Shortly after, her boyfriend is arrested. Left alone, Kasia decides to go back to the dead man’s apartment and starts pretending that they were together. At first, her deception is driven by a desire to get the man’s money – she tries to take over his insurance policy and take possession of his belongings and income. Over time, however, she becomes increasingly curious about who he was, and as she learns more about his life, she begins to form a sort of relationship with him – getting to know his loved ones and his story. As her investigation into the dead man’s identity unfolds, Kasia falls in love. Perhaps not so much with the man she never met, but with her own story, her own lie. Her journey becomes an opportunity for this estranged, fractured family to come together again – if only for a moment.
Cudze rzeczy is a story about how far apart we, as human beings, can drift from one another – so far that sometimes only a lie, and pretending to be someone we are not, can make others see us as human again.
