Classici fuori Mostra - Herzog Blaubarts Burg (Bluebeard’s Castle)

HERZOG BLAUBARTS BURG (63’)
(Bluebeard’s Castle)
by Michael Powell
with Norman Foster, Ana Raquel Satre
Austria/Germany, 1963
Restored by BFI National Archive and The Film Foundation in association with Ashbrittle Film Foundation and with the supervision of Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker Powell
Introduction by Carmelo Marabello

Bluebeard’s Castle is performed in German and is presented without English subtitles for the libretto. This was the choice of director Michael Powell who wanted audiences to be immersed in the imagery of the film rather than reading subtitles. Instead, Powell created limited English subtitles that set the scene and provide context where he felt audiences might require additional information.

Description

Duke Blubeard’s Castle is the missing link that connects The Tales of Hoffman and Peeping Tom. It combines the incredible visual invention and surreal scenography of the former, and the moral rigour, the peremptory, inevitable yet profoundly compassionate tone, of the latter. Bluebeard is Mark’s twin brother. Both live in a world of death and desolation, pursued by the terrible memories of their crimes and broken dreams. In this funereal world, the victims seem to crave their fate or stage it. Assisted by the brilliant Hein Heckroth […] on a unique set, Powell creates a tortuous and unpredictable labyrinth: a mental labyrinth. This labyrinth matches Bartok’s music perfectly”. (Bertrand Tavernier)
