In the 1980s, the American anthropologist J. Stephen Lansing made the argument that the famous rice terraces of the island of Bali were in fact elements of a giant hydraulic computer, interlinked by an urban-scale network of irrigation canals and water temples, and that the exchanges between Hindu priests and farmers were programming this network. Priests and Programmers explores the extraordinary history of this artificial landscape.
