Description
IntelligensHistorica centres on the twin studies of stabilisation and reuse of two Venetian shipyards in Heraklion and Chania, Crete, which: unlocked historical data; engaged with the local communities to explore new uses; investigated their structure and construction materials; rediscovered century-old techniques; demonstrated the exchange of expertise; preserved the atmosphere and patina of stone structures; proposed alternative uses to the vaulted spaces; designed structures for the new uses, inspired by the spaces’ historical materials and forms; recommended the use of historical mortars; completed the image of the two harbours at the urban-water interface; emphasised the circularity of historical narratives. It becomes evident that reusing historic buildings—guided by flexibility of use, reversibility of structures, and durability of materials—demonstrates the discernment of those involved in updating inherited values.
