In contemporary architectural projects in China, preserving existing trees on site is no easy feat. It demands additional cost, time, and precision. Nevertheless, it is always worth the battle. The design of the Jingyang Camphor Court project departed from maximally preserving the site’s existing trees and their intricate microtopography. The fusion of renovated and newly constructed spaces introduces a publicly accessible urban living room that accommodates cultural and artistic amenities. Trees carry time, memory and emotion. The magic of architecture is what ultimately transformed these ordinary trees into the extraordinary soul of a place.
