Description

Macao, known as the “Las Vegas of the East”, cherishes its history preserved since the 16th century alongside a vast urban area transformed after its return to China in 1999. However, amid globalisation and digital evolution, this tourist hotspot and East-West cultural exchange hub faces dilemmas: maintaining cultural identity, addressing social issues, and creating space for innovative development. Macao’s most fascinating aspect is its coexisting “cities within a city”: historic Macao, the casino city, the new city representing modern city development, and Macao’s invisible digital operation as a cashless city.
The exhibition consists of two parts. Iwan Baan’s photography highlights the contrasts between these “worlds”. A collaborative study by a team from the China Academy of Art and the University of Saint Joseph, Macao explores the creative possibilities between Macao and the world, aligned with the Biennale’s theme.
