description

This exhibition draws on Wu Li’s life and cultural practices, spiritually completing his unfinished journey to Europe via Macao over 300 years ago. In Macao, he adopted the Portuguese surname Jacone. Later, he documented East-West cultures in San Ba Ji (Collection from St Paul’s). The great painter’s transformation from a Chinese literatus to Catholic positioned him as a pioneer in cross-cultural exchange.

The exhibition presents his life alongside Macao’s cultural fusion. Artists Eric Fok Hoi Seng, O Chi Wai and Veronica Lei Fong Ieng reinterpret Wu’s spiritual space from a contemporary perspective. Outdoor installations trace Wu’s historical origins, leading to an indoor layout that reflects his regrets and explorations.

Visitors are encouraged to understand the connections between Wu and Macao, bridging local history and the international art community. This highlights Macao’s diverse practices and innovative spirit in fostering integration. The exhibition also raises questions about fostering cross-cultural understanding while preserving cultural uniqueness, aligning with In Minor Keys, the theme of this year’s Biennale Arte.
