description
Bringing together works made over the extraordinary seven decades of his artistic contribution, Lee Ufan traces the evolution of the artist’s now iconic painterly language while also presenting three installations, including two made specifically for this exhibition. Lee, one of the foremost figures in the Japanese Mono-ha movement and a key contributor to the Korean Dansaekhwa group, has developed a body of painting that consistently explores the possibilities of embodying and representing space and time through painterly gesture on canvas.
Included are the groundbreaking early works from the “From Point” and “From Line series”, which focus on the energised placement of the brush. These works establish Lee as a pre-eminent painter-philosopher whose writing and reflection on art form an equally significant dimension of his practice. Subsequent galleries are dedicated to the vibrant “From Winds” and “With Winds” series, which Lee has described as a “living composition of empty space”; the Correspondance series; the now iconic “Dialogue works”, which focus on the singular brushstroke; and Lee’s most recent series, “Response”, in which colour becomes a key agent.
