Synopsis

Encircling its central square, a new town emerges in all its diversity. A crossroad of stories, edifications, hopes, and conflicts altogether. Social ties and cultures take root. People nurture sympathy and care for their equals, but also animosity towards those who are different. It does not take long for an ‘us versus them’ atmosphere to take over. From the Main Square is an interactive VR experience that invites the viewer to witness the rise and fall of a divided society. A civilization blossoms, with all its contradictions, only to become a danger to itself.

Director’s Statement

From the Main Square is the result of having Berlin before my eyes and Brazil in my mind during the last four years. It is conceived as a compact illustration of a social disruption. Daniel Eizirik’s drawing style was combined with Samuel Patthey’s straight-ahead 2d animations to constitute the backbone of its visual identity. The script is a collage of occasionally funny, eventually brutal urban absurdities that societies that experience the maladies of political polarisation and environmental collapse undergo. To tell that story in interactive VR was considerably challenging. At the start, we were quite clueless about how to technically and narratively structure the whole thing. Trial and error was the order of the day. If I knew all it would take, I do not think we would have ever tried something that size as a student team for a VR debut.
