What Love Builds
synopsis
In 1970 two things happened: Russell Crowe stepped onto a film set for the first time and received his first guitar. “Everything starts with music. Everything in my life as a creative person actually begins with music.” In What Love Builds, Crowe gives us a soliloquy set to a lifetime of his own music. Revealing and deeply personal, it shows how music and acting are intrinsic and interconnected through storytelling and performance. What Love Builds is a rare, deep dive into the inspirations behind this legendary and enigmatic artist. Featuring archival footage and photos, What Love Builds traces a journey of street performances, pubs, nightclubs and theatre stages. As his career on screen expands globally, the artist never stops his search for self-expression. “Film is great. It’s a cerebral adventure. You construct the performance in your lounge room, you go and do your job, and then a year to a year and a half later you see the effect of that, the series of emotional points that you may have planned and whether you’ve taken the audience with you or not. Rock and roll is right there and right then. It’s completely immediate and that’s what is exciting about it.” Behind the success, accolades and awards his passion for music and his commitment to the power of storytelling are steadfast – despite the roadblocks, critics and naysayers. His creativity is a perfect confluence – music and acting working in harmony through the peaks and troughs of a career that starts in childhood. Like a sculptor chipping away insecurities to reveal a core form, we watch the man grow and evolve into the master storyteller we know today. This personal fireside chat explodes onto stages from St Kilda to Siena, via Glastonbury Festival and the Whiskey a Go Go. Full of heartfelt candour and self-deprecating humour, What Love Builds connects us to the man as he connects with audiences around the world from Pompeii to Dublin. It’s one of those experiences you didn’t know you needed until you saw it. It leaves an indelible mark.
Director’s Statement
Everything in my life as a creative person begins with music. For fifteen years I’ve been gathering material, concert footage, archive photos and interviews about my lesser-known career as a musician. It’s a film about storytelling, performance, artistic integrity, determination and joy.
