Synopsis

Belgrade is a city split in two. In the occupied buildings and crowded streets, Lena fights for a world she believes can be changed. From the same neighbourhood, Stefan is torn between the life he wants and the forces pulling him to the other side of the protests. When they meet, they recognise a shared restlessness neither can quite name.

Director’s Statement

In 2021, while mentoring a workshop, I met a girl named Lena whose presence awakened vivid memories of my own adolescence. Through her, I caught a glimpse of how my younger self might look and think today. She inspired the fictional protagonist of Do kraja dana.
Growing up in Zemun, a municipality of Belgrade, under the shadow of rigid masculine norms, I longed to escape the roles imposed on me. That discomfort, defiance and urge to run fuel this story.
Set against Serbia’s largest student protests – among the largest in Europe – which erupted after the collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad that killed sixteen people, the film follows Lena (20), an anarchist student active in the anti-government movement, and Stefan (22), a working-class youth who finds himself, almost by chance, among pro- government loyalists. Standing on opposite sides of the protests, they navigate ideological and intimate conflict in a fractured post-Yugoslav society.
The cast is composed primarily of non-professional actors whose performances carry traces of their own lives. The only professional actor portrays Lena’s brother, whose actions set off a chain of impulsive decisions that shape her journey throughout the film. The point of view mainly stays close to Lena and Stefan, using obstruction and off-screen space to evoke a sense of entrapment. It gradually opens into predominantly static, contemplative compositions in nature. Blending conventions of melodrama, comedy, crime and road movie, the film forms an elliptical coming-of-age portrait of adolescence and resistance.
