La ragazza con la Leica

Paris, July 14, 1937. Gerda Taro spends her final day before returning to the Spanish front with Robert Capa and the friends with whom she fled Nazi Germany. As past and present intertwine, the key moments of her life resurface: her political activism in Leipzig, her years in exile in Paris, her encounter with Capa, her discovery of photography and her growing determination to use her Leica as a tool of resistance and freedom.
A portrait of the first female photojournalist to die on the battlefield, a woman who embodied a time when everything still seemed possible.

Gerda Taro’s photographs create a dialogue between past and present, just as her story does. Her desire for freedom, her way of looking at the world, her joy in living and her determination have left an indelible mark on those who loved her and continue to resonate today.
Rediscovering her legacy means reflecting on the political power of images and their ability to tell History as it unfolds, while exploring an intimate dimension of European memory: that of young exiles confronting totalitarianism, racism and threats to democracy on the eve of the Second World War. A world distant in time, but not so distant from the anxieties of our own.
The life and work of the “girl with the Leica” evoke the energy of ideals and resistance, the fierce courage of youth and the drama inherent in every struggle for freedom.
