La città dei vivi

Luca is 23. He lives with the family who adopted him and love him as their own. He spends his days with friends between the outskirts and the city centre, and has a girlfriend with whom he shares a young yet deeply meaningful love. Like many his age, Luca is searching for his place in the world, at a time when everything still seems possible and, at the same time, already lost. In the course of that search, he leads a double life. Then, one night, after what appears to be a chance encounter, the course of Luca’s life is shattered by an act of blind, senseless violence.

This film offers no explanation for the tragedy – no insight, no theory about adolescence or contemporary society. It is a coming-of-age story cut short, punctuated by the humanity of those surrounding its protagonist, who gradually become a chorus – or rather, the music that shapes the rhythm and atmosphere of the city through which he moves. Visually, the intention was to adopt a language that is at once spare, naturalistic and lyrical. Suggestion became more powerful than exposition. The distance maintained from the characters follows what I would describe as a sense of restraint and discretion. There is no explicit violence in any gesture or gaze. Only tenderness.
