Moragheb (Falling House)

A modest family on the outskirts of Tehran faces the imminent destruction of their home as part of a vast redevelopment project. While Rashid, the father and a prison guard, is being accused of corruption, he discovers that his eldest daughter, Ensi, is secretly planning to leave Iran to become a model. As the bulldozers draw ever closer, the tensions within the household start to rise.

For several years, I chose not to make films under the restrictive and censorial conditions of my home country, Iran. Now, I have decided to make a film without compromise, a film about lost freedom, about choices buried under fear and imposed destiny.
Moragheb is not only the story of a family. It is the story of a society reflected through its most intimate unit: the home. A place intended to offer safety can become like a prison, where fear is disguised as honor and control is justified in the name of love and protection.
The film does not present oppression and freedom as a simple binary. Through three generations of women, it captures different stages in the changing consciousness of Iranian society. The mother belongs to a generation that has survived by enduring, compromising and suffering as an unavoidable part of life. Ensi represents a younger generation fighting for her own future. Janan, driven by an unpredictable force, represents a courageous generation. She carries the possibility of a future in which freedom is no longer merely imagined, but gradually made real through her growth.
Yet Moragheb is not a slogan. It’s a warning, a quiet but urgent alarm about the collapse of a society. About the moment when care turns into captivity, when love suffocates, and when the private space of a home mirrors a larger structure of oppression. Decades of repression have pushed my country into a profound crisis and an unjust war, bringing even greater suffering to people already trapped under that oppression.
