Too Much Sugar
Synopsis
Ryan “Holli-wood” Holliger is a charismatic pit bull of a man with six kids by five different women. His best friend AccRite is a rapper and laborer, dealing with an unimaginable loss. They have big dreams of making their own movie about fatherhood in their working-class Missouri town. Over the course of one pivotal, madcap year, the film becomes something else entirely: a vehicle for accountability, healing and self-discovery for their families.
Director’s Statement
Too Much Sugar is the next step in the collaborative, therapeutic documentary cinema developed by our filmmaking team. We co-create a film with Ryan Holliger, a carpenter, fighter, and father of six children by five different women in rural Missouri. Ryan has skeletons in his closet, so he wants to make a movie – a zany comedy – to show his family that he can be a better man and help them live their dreams. The film mixes the making of Ryan’s movie with a gritty documentary portrait of his working-class realities and offers him a puncher’s chance at redemption.
Meanwhile, Ryan’s best friend AccRite is trying to move forward after his 16-year-old son was murdered two years ago. Ryan helps nudge his friend into a drama therapy-like filmmaking process to help him get some closure. Made with the same grit and determination as its protagonists, Too Much Sugar is a working-class film about working-class people.
Telling the stories of working people is personal to me because of where I came from. Ryan and I share a basic desire to correct the mistakes of our deadbeat fathers and stop the generational hurt by being good fathers ourselves. It’s not just me telling Ryan’s story, but us co-creating (with the collaboration of our families and the whole crew) a film about the things that matter most.
