Synopsis
When Nathan Silver and his wife Nicole Fuentes moved halfway around the world, Nathan’s parents took up birdwatching and sent them audio recordings from their bird-identifying app. The recordings contained more than just bird sounds, but also discussions about the birds, life in the United States and aging as a couple. From their new home in France, Nathan and Nicole began pairing the audio with footage of the birds and the life around them.
Director’s Statement
What stayed with me from my parents’ bird recordings wasn’t the actual bird sounds, it was what slipped through them: my parents’ voices, their silences, fragments of conversation about aging, about America, about a life continuing without me and Nicole. This is an attempt to hold up two worlds at once: the one we left and the one we are learning to inhabit. The birds are something of a fragile thread – a way of staying connected across a distance that is as much political as it is geographical. What we are really listening to is time itself, passing and quietly transforming what still binds us to home.
