Synopsis

The sixth chapter in the history of the Venice International Film Festival, reconstructed through Rai’s chronicles by Rai Cultura and Rai Teche, explores the years 2001–2012: the opening decade of the 21st century, between globalisation and new cinematic languages.
It spans the final year of Alberto Barbera’s first term, the late Moritz de Hadeln’s two years as director, Marco Müller’s eight-year tenure, and the beginning of Barbera’s second term. Through programmes such as Blob, Stracult, Cinematografo and Off Hollywood, as well as the new thematic channels Rai News 24 and Raisat Cinema (later Rai Movie), Rai documented the Venetian festival in a style that echoed the emerging “reality show” format. A journey through the authors and stars who, year after year, gather at the Lido for the oldest and most prestigious international film festival.

Directors’ Statement

The story of the editions of the Venice Film Festival at the beginning of the 21st century must also address the exponential growth of the archival material produced and preserved during those years: compared with the previous decade, a 300% increase in hours of footage. This was largely due to the arrival of satellite and then digital broadcasting, and the rise of thematic channels, which preserved red carpet and photocall footage recorded in the emerging language of reality television.
At the same time, the Festival’s historical value became increasingly evident through the memory of past editions, shared by both journalists and the protagonists of these reports. Marco Bellocchio could thus reflect on the precedent of Ermanno Olmi’s Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, while Bernardo Bertolucci, honoured with a Special Award for the Festival’s 75th anniversary in 2007, could look back on his first participation at the Mostra and on his own idea of cinema 45 years earlier.
