synopsis

Filmmaker Avi Mograbi and his Arabic teacher and friend Ali Al Azhari go looking for the remains of Ali’s village, Saffuriya, from which he was expelled during the 1948 Palestinian Nakba. Instead of ruins, they find Halayon, wild asparagus.

director's statement

I did not make this film, I found it. While working on my video installation for Biennale Arte 2026 (at the Arsenale), based on my 2012 film Nichnasti pa’am lagan, I rediscovered footage that was barely used in the film. Ali Al Azhari and I went looking for traces of the 1948 catastrophe, the Nakba. However, everywhere we turned we found traces of a life that had never ceased. Fifteen years later, amidst yet another catastrophe, these images speak not only of what was lost but also of what persists: memory, recognition, and life itself.
