synopsis
They’re Here is a horror film that follows Edén Villa (pseudonym) and anonymous Minneapolis residents as they evade and resist the paramilitary occupation of their city. Told in the tradition of dystopian cinema, They’re Here is set in a winter landscape where masked agents abduct children, residents travel in car trunks, shackled prisoners are loaded onto aeroplanes within eyesight of vacationers and bicyclists track the movements of an invading force.
Directors’ Statement
Our cinematic approach began with a 10-second online video we saw of an idyllic winter scene of snow-covered trees juxtaposed with the sound of screams: “Stay inside! Close your doors! They’re here!” The monsters are unseen, but the voices describe the terror — it is both a horror film and a bone-chilling documentary. We wanted to express something similar with our film. As journalists, we are horrified by the normalisation of state violence. In the United States, it is now normal for masked paramilitary ICE agents to abduct children and execute people in broad daylight. We believe that cinema can disrupt normalisation. Images of resilience and resistance show history is not inevitable, and violence does not always win.
