synopsis
Seijun Suzuki is a cinema legend, a pop and irreverent force of creativity whose artistic audacity during his 1960s period in Japan has continued to influence contemporary cinema. From Hong Kong to Hollywood, filmmakers such as John Woo, Jim Jarmusch, Quentin Tarantino and Wong Kar-wai regularly pay tribute to him in their films.
And in Japan, a whole generation of artists – drawn from the worlds of manga, the visual arts and technopop – revere this master of subverting the conventions of crime thrillers and melodramas. Twist & Shoot Mister Suzuki traces the hallmarks of Suzuki’s aesthetic while also defying conventions – in this case, those of the documentary film itself.
director's statement
In the early 2000s, I was fortunate enough to interview and film Seijun Suzuki on several occasions, as well as a number of his collaborators, in both Europe and Japan. More than twenty years later, I wanted to pay tribute to the surrealist frenzy of his cinema by dedicating a film to him. An unconventional documentary that would play on Suzuki’s own irreverent and unpredictable spirit, introducing fictional scenes interwoven with clips from his own films, and bringing in filmmakers, as well as artists from other fields such as dance, music and manga – all influenced by that pop and unruly aesthetic that elevated Suzuki to the rank of a major artist in the seventh art.
