In his second year as Director of Biennale Danza, Wayne McGregor will be leading the Biennale College Dance in 2022. This unique learning and study programme is designed to equip 16 young dancers with new skills, knowledge and abilities in their chosen career path; nurtured by inspiring world-class teachers, coaches, choreographers and industry professionals. Through high quality technical, creative, improvisatory and performance experiences the 2022 cohort will immerse themselves in an intensive 3 month programme that will include the re-staging of a seminal dance event by the legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham, participate in a AI generated dance and technology residency utilising Google x McGregor’s creative toolbox the Living Archive and collaborate on a new commission made exclusively for the Biennale College by multi-disciplinary artist and Golden Lion, Saburo Teshigawara.

Biennale College dancers will also collaborate with 2 emerging choreographers (see separate call-out) who will each present their own short creations during the 16th International Festival of Contemporary Dance of La Biennale di Venezia.

Dancers selected for this programme will have access to individual mentoring, masterclasses and talks and will attend the international performances by companies invited to Biennale Dance 2022.

Project structure

The project will take place from May 9th to July 31st 2022.

Each day will begin with a technique class in ballet or contemporary, led by world class teachers from McGregor’s network, followed by workshop sessions that will focus on repertoire, improvisation and the new commissions.

The programme’s opening week will be led by McGregor and will focus on his study of evolved Physical Thinking through choreographic and performative practise.
