Description

Set to be performed at the Basilica di San Marco, this concert traces a single thread: chant. Spanning nearly a millennium, it brings together four distinct approaches, each offering a path spiritual elevation. The music of Hildegard von Bingen represents a 12th-century vision of chant through her own original compositions; Gregorio Allegri’s Miserere mei, Deus reflects the living continuation of the Gregorian tradition; and the works of Arvo Pärt reimagine this heritage through a musical language informed in part by Orthodox sacred music. The programme also includes the world premiere of a new commission by Kara-Lis Coverdale: a rare undertaking for The Tallis Scholars and a contemporary contribution to the a cappella choral repertoire. Among the works presented, Pärt’s Da pacem Domine offers a particularly direct connection to chant, with the alto voice carrying a complete chant melody throughout the piece.
