Where Splendid Horses Run
On Tuesday 23 June 2026, La Biennale di Venezia presents the exhibition Where Splendid Horses Run at the Fine Arts Zanabazar Museum in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The exhibition constitutes the fifth chapter of the Special Project of the Historical Archive of La Biennale di Venezia, It Is the Wind That Makes the Sky. La Biennale di Venezia in the Footsteps of Marco Polo, curated by Luigia Lonardelli and conceived on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death (1324–2024).
Following the stages in Hangzhou (China), Venice (Italy), Istanbul (Turkey), and New Delhi(India), the programme arrives in Ulaanbaatar with an exhibition presenting works by Mongolian artists Baatarzorig Batjargal and Dolgor Ser-Od. The exhibition unfolds along a path that highlights the dialogue between memory, history, and the contemporary imagination, inviting the public to rediscover Mongolian cultural heritage and its rich symbolic stratification.
In the spaces in front of the Fine Arts Zanabazar Museum in Ulaanbaatar, Amfibio will also be presented: the structure designed by Istanbul-based artist Cevdet Erek, which has accompanied the Special Project since its first stage in Hangzhou. From 24 to 27 June 2026, Amfibio will host a programme of readings curated by the Mongolian Writers’ Union.
Speakers at the opening will include Giovanna Piccarreta, Ambassador of Italy to Mongolia; Baigalmaa Purevsukh, Director of The Fine Arts Zanabazar Museum; Debora Rossi, Head of the Historical Archive of La Biennale di Venezia; Luigia Lonardelli, Curator of the Special Project; and Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, President of La Biennale di Venezia.
