Seagrass meadows are a vital part of the earth’s ecosystems, and under threat from human activity. Historically, builders around the Mediterranean used seagrass for insulation. The Only Flowering Plant in the Ocean renews these practices by demonstrating the potential for this material to be used in house building, furniture making, and other projects. Inspired by Murano glassmakers, who once shipped their wares in crates packed with Venetian seagrass, the installation features samples of seagrass materials alongside ceramics handmade from the unique clay of the island of Aegina, transported to the Biennale in seagrass collected on local beaches.
