Statement by Alberto Barbera
“Classici Fuori Mostra, now in its seventh edition, is an initiative organised by La Biennale di Venezia whose audience appreciation shows no signs of waning – stated the artistic director of the Venice International Film Festival Alberto Barbera – a clear sign that offering a programme of great classic films which in one way or another have helped to shape the history of cinema, continues to generate an interest that is not equally satisfied by the possibility of viewing these films online or on streaming platforms. Allow me to reiterate once again that all the films are shown in the original language restored versions, and are introduced for the occasion by film critics and university professors, whom La Biennale and I personally would like to thank for their continued and generous commitment to this initiative. Along with the success that the re-release of classic films by traditional distribution is currently enjoying, this is confirmation that a discerning audience prefers to watch films in movie theatres rather than within the confines of their own home. In the place, that is, where films should always be seen, because they were conceived and made for the big screen which can best highlight their artistic and spectacular qualities. Like every year, the programme allows viewers to move between auteur films in the strictest sense, and others that have become part of our collective imagination for their ability to shape more traditional models of narration and spectacle.”
