Un bon petit soldat

At 43 years old, Carla is a high-performing and deeply devoted business executive. Insecure beneath her polished exterior, she has still built a successful career, often at the expense of her family life. Recently hired as the Human Resources manager of a major corporation, she is tasked to promote employees’ well-being while maintaining the performance goals imposed by her boss. But when Carla discovers a case of toxic management, compromises become unavoidable, threatening to push her to the breaking point.

French psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Christophe Dejours has devoted much of his research to the mechanisms of subjugation and servitude within the corporate world. He describes the workplace as an environment shaped by masculinist rules, where individuals are expected to assert the idea of their own power. At 43, Carla, the film’s central character, is a woman who works tirelessly and has consistently performed at the highest level. She has very little self-confidence – and perhaps it is precisely because she has so little of it that her servitude stems, in part, from a persistent feeling of not being fully legitimate in the position she holds, despite her talent and capacity for work. Beneath the suit of an executive wholly devoted to her company’s cause, Carla is a victim. A victim of her own fragilities, which she has always tried to avoid by adopting the virile, domineering language of strength. A language that gives us the illusion of our own power, while keeping our precious and deeply human vulnerability at a distance. Until the moment reality forces the truth upon her.
