synopsis

Drawing freely on Sergio Donati’s novel Il sepolcro di carta, the story takes place in the fastmoving, youthful London of the late 1960s. The city’s streets, its iconic locations and its contradictions shape the protagonists’ headlong race through the capital. Bernard, a French actor in town for work, and Jane, a striking and enigmatic Londoner, meet under the most unlikely of circumstances: over a dead body. During the next twenty-four hours they become entangled in a series of escapes, pursuits and murders, while falling in love in a story whose outcome neither could foresee.

Critical note

At its heart, my film is a search for a simple, essential truth amid a series of false, paradoxical and irrational events. I find it difficult to classify it in conventional terms. It is a love story, but not a romance; it has the structure of a giallo, a mystery-thriller, but it is not a thriller; its characters are driven by complex psychological motives, but it is not a psychological film. […] On the one hand, I tried to tell, simply, the story of the brief encounter between Jean- Louis Trintignant and Ewa Aulin; on the other, I wanted to recount the violent, absurd and senseless adventures in which the two protagonists find themselves, filtering them through various forms of mediation, including those we have absorbed from the technique of cartoons. In this respect, I made use of the advice of Italy’s leading comics artist, Guido Crepax.
