La ilusión viaja en tranvía (Illusion travels by streetcar)

Juan Godinez “Caireles” and Tobías Hernández “Tarrajas” use enviable expertise to repair an old, obsolete tram only to discover that it is scheduled to be replaced with a new model. The two fear they will suffer the same fate.
Disappointed, frightened, and a little confused, they decide to give the tram one last spin through the streets of Mexico City.

I believe the initial plot was sketched out by Mauricio de la Serna and José Revueltas, while Luis Alcoriza and I collaborated on the writing. The plot spanned a few pages: a tram disappears, various adventures follow, and finally the tram reappears in the depot.
You know that on public transportation in Mexico, it’s possible – or at least it was possible back then – to find people carrying crates of fruit or live turkeys, in short: the most incredible things, and that’s why it occurred to me that the tram would be ridden by workers from the Rastro (the slaughterhouse) carrying quarters of beef, and by devout old women carrying the image of a saint.
