La Moula

Thanks to his old-time friend Charlie, a veteran cocaine smuggler, Jérôme, an organised-crime reporter with a career at a standstill, has an opportunity to get back on track. Charlie and his crew of hardened gangsters expect a container of Colombian cocaine to dock at a port near Marseille – potentially the last score allowing them to retire. Before the big load arrives, Charlie gives Jérôme carte blanche to document them from the inside while they all live together in modest suburban home in Marseille. Nevertheless, one of them thinks he has recognised a narc in town…

For over twenty-five years, working as an organised-crime investigative reporter, both in France and abroad, I have always favoured the immersive approach to better understand these worlds from the inside, rather than through the lens of law enforcement or the judicial system.
In the whole process, a fundamental question was raised: where do you draw the line? How far can one go to witness reality? At what point does a reporter cease to be an observer and become a participant? While trying to answer this question, La Moula was born – the story of a journalist who gains unprecedented access to a drug ring. Aside from the thriller aspect, I wanted to explore the grey area where the worlds of reporters, criminals and police collide within their own limits. While each party pursues its own goal, with a strong belief they are acting for the right reasons, they are forced to redefine their own sense of morality.
I also wanted to show what happens off-camera, in a space where narratives are crafted, where the line between observation, involvement and staging becomes blurred.
La Moula is based on situations I’ve witnessed, stories I’ve heard and all of my inquiries since I began my career. More than just a crime thriller, it is a reflection on appearances, their subtext and the thin line between reality and its representation.
