Description
Biennale College Musica 2026 is a residency, research and production programme involving five composers, sound artists and performers under the age of thirty, selected through an international open call. Over six months, the participants and their mentors developed a series of workshops with the women incarcerated at the Casa di reclusione femminile della Giudecca (Giudecca Women’s Detention Centre) in Venice. Through writing and spoken-word workshops, group listening sessions, field recordings and open improvisations with synthesisers, guitars and drum machines, the project encouraged musical exchange and collective participation. The workshops were led by artists Moor Mother, Alif Hilal and Simone Trabucchi, invited by Artistic Director Caterina Barbieri as mentors of this edition.
Inspired by the Festival’s theme, dedicated to childhood and intuition, MUSICA LIBERA embraced openness rather than predetermined outcomes. The resulting sound installation, activated by a live performance involving both the incarcerated participants and the Biennale College Musica composers, is presented inside the detention facility.
