Bumi Purnati Indonesia / Yusril Katil - Under the Volcano
Description
From Indonesia, and more precisely from Sumatra, comes an original form of dance, music and song that emerged from the complex traditional martial art known as Silat, proclaimed Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. It is through this fascinating, centuries-old linguistic code that Under the Volcano is brought to the stage, based on Lampung Karam, a poem by the Sumatran poet and scholar Muhammad Saleh, who was an eyewitness to the devastating eruption of Krakatoa in 1883, evoked in the performance.
Under the Volcano conveys a powerful and moving narrative through the simplest of stage elements—such as eight wooden ladders used to recreate mountains, valleys and markets; through an intimate weave of images and sounds—live wind instruments and traditional percussion; and above all through the suppleness and technical precision of the eleven performers, outstanding actor-singer-dancers coordinated by director Yusril Katil.
