Bumi Purnati Indonesia / Sri Qadariatin - Hikayat perahu (The Tale of Boat)
Description
The second Balinese dance-theatre work by Bumi Purnati Indonesia, the interpreter of a unique artistic form shaped by the complex of martial arts known as Silat, recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. Hikayat perahu / The Tale of Boat draws on a seminal text of Malay literature, Syair Perahu, by the Sufi mystic poet Hamzah Fansuri, who lived between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In the story of a boat navigating the ocean, the poet symbolises life and the spiritual journey the soul undertakes towards God.
“The rain poured down. The sky was dark and the air was very cold. I remembered my mother's story about the flood that had leveled our village. The flood brought mud and logs, burying people in their homes. I asked, "Are they angry?" She replied, "They never are. The mountain is dizzy. Her stomach ached, and then she vomited. The mud and logs the food brought were her vomit I asked, "Why did the mountain vomit?" She replied, "Because something evil happened to it. Don’t worry, Kid...go back to sleep... Let me tell you a tale about a boat sailing on the ocean”.
