Description

How do city and architecture flourish together? This question is central to this threedimensional ‘capriccio’ that displays a fictional yet recognisable Flemish urban environment.
Over time, the informal city in Flanders and Brussels has developed a unique relationship with its architecture. This staged urban landscape reveals how historical layers, morphological peculiarities, and unforeseen collisions are an endless source of energy for contemporary production. The works brings out a certain thematic discipline when it comes to the production of an attractive urban environment. The interface between the public domain and the building, the plasticity of the street, the joyful reuse of the existing fabric, the elegant scale jump . . . all these issues have gradually become key components of the collective discourse on how to produce a lasting environment.

Biennale Sneak Peek

Image 1 – How will we live together?
The Belgium Pavilion translated How will we live together? to How do we design a city together?. How do architects listen to their surroundings, but also take a critical distance? It is a complex play of being yourself and listening to other people.

The idea of the scenography is to build a fictional landscape, a capriccio. A cityscape made out of 50 models on a scale 1/15. Composite Presence is about creating a city together, which is a very robust ecology of differences.

The exhibition was a puzzle with many dimensions. Together with the carpenters we’ve been staining, sponging and sanding different types of wood to produce an environment which is rich in its material experience and nevertheless very consistent.
