Description

Why do Canadian locations so often double for other places in our favourite films?
Impostor Cities looks at architecture by going to the movies. It lovingly celebrates the Canadian cities that pretend to be other places in our shared stories. Toronto stands in for Tokyo. Montreal and Vancouver masquerade as Moscow and Paris. A custom-designed installation immerses audiences in film-famous modernist icons, historic neighbourhoods, and everyday cityscapes from St. John’s to Victoria. The enchantment of these cinematic cities makes architecture, artifice, and authenticity unravel in shifting moments of consumption and perception.

Biennale Sneak Peek

Image 1 – How will we live together?
The exhibition puts visitors in movie-mode, engaging our bodies to experience how architectural meaning emerges from our communal encounters with films.

Image 2 – Sneak peek of the project
We interviewed 30 Canadian filmmakers, writers, directors, producers, scholars, and critics. They offer critical analysis of architecture’s contribution to the shared global mythmaking of film.
