Traditionally, brick structures rely on heavy quantities of material to achieve stability and strength, which raises the question how we can create a lightweight brick structure that remains durable, efficient, and strong, while minimising material usage? Elephant Chapel takes this question one step further, to ask how we can build a durable and robust brick structure using bio-materials—specifically, elephant dung—with minimal material consumption? The installation features a four-meter-tall arched structure constructed entirely of elephant dung bricks that is strong yet lightweight, minimal yet durable, airy yet robust.
