In lifeways that have all but vanished, for hundreds of thousands of years hunter-gatherers had to depend on materials at hand to assemble simple yet elegant make-shift dwellings wherever they camped. One example of this today is the Ba’Aka pygmies in the Congo basin, who interweave saplings to fashion a traditional leafy retreat.
