The construction sector is a major contributor to global waste, with construction and demolition waste accounting for nearly one-third of all waste in the EU. In Spain, over 50% of this waste comes from brick and ceramic materials, while still being widely produced. This raises the question: How can we stop generating waste from the very resources we so intensively exploit? FRICKS explores how to repurpose construction waste—specifically bricks—into a new building material. It is the result of new manufacturing protocols for CDW-Brick: a geopolymer material system with controlled porosity and density. FRICKS is a lightweight, non-toxic insulation and façade system.
