Description

Amanda Heng Liang Ngim transforms the Singapore Pavilion through a site-specific installation. Visitors enter an environment shaped by an architectural intervention that recalibrates circulation and view. Broad treads modulate pace and rhythm, and movement slows into moments of sitting, leaning and quiet exchange.

At the centre are two bodies of work that ground Heng’s long engagement with the body as both subject and medium. Photographs from Parts of My Body (1990) present close-ups that trace the contours of skin and joints, registering the body as a site of attention rather than display. The images are direct and unadorned, allowing the artist’s body to be perceived on its own terms and locating a life in continuity through the discipline of looking.

A series of video portraits extends this attention from Singapore to Venice, turning to the artist’s own body at home and to residents in Venice in moments of repose. Filmed in real time without intervention, the work follows bodies as they turn inward and move beyond the physical form, settling into a quiet, steady pace in relation to their environment. The work resists monumentality and iconic vistas, attending instead to how stillness is negotiated within dense urban settings and how bodies quietly reclaim their own rhythms.
