Hiedra

Synopsis
Azucena, a 30-year-old woman, spies on the teenagers of a group home. In their games and sense of brotherhood, she searches for fragments of her own past, driven by a traumatic event that marked her adolescence and left her suspended in time. Her interest centres especially on Julio, a 17-year-old boy.
Although their social worlds are far apart, their wounds, shared laughter and the discovery of one another guide their Oedipal journey towards the rocks of a volcano. There, far from everything, these two characters, marked by absence, are transformed into something else.
Director's statement
I’m drawn to the power of ambiguity — what moves beneath the surface of the story. The jolt in the arm when it’s the elbow that gets hit, the face that warms with anxiety, the childhood wound betrayed by small gestures. I want to push the boundaries of the intimacies we’ve come to accept as normal. In Hiedra, I seek a desire that is disordered, unresolved. I explore, without fear, tenderness towards the Other: a baby, a grandfather, a mother, a child, a sister. I seek a silent atmosphere, a singular scent that lingers.
I’m interested in telling stories from the body, in its clumsiness. I work with non-professional actors who carry a hypnotic way of being in the world before the camera.
Azucena carries the brutal wound of abuse. She is a creature without territory, a girl frozen in time who acts from an instinctive, selfish place. Julio belongs to a pack that survived abandonment. The absence of the maternal is present in his anger, in his paternal role with other children. They come from very different social worlds, and that tension is exposed. The journey to the volcanic landscape allows a drift away from the parameters of normality — ones they never belonged to in the first place.
