Synopsis

Venice, 1563. Asher and Aaron are two inseparable Jewish teenagers, fleeing the massacres of Central Europe. Injured, they reach the House of the Catechumens, where “infidels” who wish to convert are cared for, fed, educated, and integrated into Christian society... but once inside, there is no turning back.

Director’s Statement

The short film depicts the minutes of a trial held in Venice in the mid-16th century. In studying the story, I sensed that time had not weakened its emotional impact and that it allowed me to explore the crisis of a symbiotic relationship through the labyrinths of identity. I believe that to make a story true and therefore universal, one must begin with its unrepeatable singularity; for this reason, I rely on documents and try to convey their most authentic essence. Entire sentences are taken from the official records, and each character uses their own language, itself a story of their origins and life journey. I then sought an imperfect image, the result of aging lenses and a camera always one step behind the characters and therefore incapable of anticipating their movements. All this, to convey the opaque filter that always stands between us and reality when we try to capture it.
