Synopsis

The shooting of Franco Maresco’s film about Carmelo Bene is abruptly interrupted after yet another accident on set. Pulling the plug is the producer Andrea Occhipinti, frustrated by the endless takes and constant delays. Meanwhile, Maresco accuses the production of “filmicide” before vanishing without a trace. In an attempt to repair the damage, a friend of Maresco, Umberto Cantone, steps in, summoning as witnesses all those involved in the endeavour, in an investigation that becomes a chance to explore the personality and ideas of one of Italian cinema’s most corrosive and apocalyptic authors.
But what if, in the meantime, far from everything and everyone, Maresco is finishing his film — in his words, “the only way to give shape to the anger and horror I feel for this shitty world”?

Director’s Statement

I’ve long realised that each of my films has been nothing but a trap I walked into with merciless self-destruction. This time, however — and for the first time — I’m afraid I won’t come out of it all in one piece. I should have listened to Miss Filomena, my old teacher who used to tutor me after school in elementary: she always used to tell me the tale of the pitcher and the well. But now it’s too late for regrets. Besides, the well’s gone dry.
