Synopsis

Giuliana, an extroverted, chaotic, and unconventional young woman with a complicated romantic past, was on the verge of attempting suicide for love shortly before meeting Pietro. Pietro is a lawyer from a very traditional bourgeois family. The two fall in love and get married right away. The film chronicles their first moments of living together, amid lively dialogue, misunderstandings, and cultural and personality clashes. Things become even more complicated when the newlyweds receive a visit from Pietro’s mother and sister. The film explores the difficulties of a couple born from a sudden but genuine love, within the framework of the social conventions of the 1960s.

Critic's note

"A soap-bubble film, fragile to the point of immateriality, as if made of air, of words that flow quickly and cheerfully in a deliberately unpretentious language to mimic the banality of everyday life. Yet Ginzburg, to whom the film remains faithful in the wording rather than in the staging, manages to construct solid and eloquent characters out of the apparent nothingness of the narrative materials [...] in this apparent nothingness, Ginzburg tackles, without the slightest heaviness, issues of no small importance, the glaring class differences of the Italy of the time [...], divorce, even abortion. Above all, demystifying the convention of love as passion." (Luigi Locatelli)
