synopsis

Dedicated to Marilyn Monroe on the centenary of her birth, the film features yet another extraordinary performance by Ellen Burstyn, showcasing her uncommon talent as a performer. The film’s cast also includes Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, and Sepideh Moafi. Johnson portrays Monroe at the height of her fame, while Burstyn stars as a version of Marilyn the world never got the chance to see. Flesh Impact takes its title from a phrase once used to describe Marilyn Monroe’s aura – that she looked so real and luminous on camera that viewers felt they could touch her through the screen.

Director’s Statement

When I was asked to make a film commemorating what would have been Marilyn Monroe’s 100th birthday, I didn’t know much about her. I had been mesmerised by her weird and wild performances, both on screen and off, and I went on a deep dive, trying to understand a little more about who she was: her relationship to being an artist, to her family and her husbands, her teachers (Stanislavsky!), her body and her mind. In the end, Flesh Impact is a film about being an artist in the public eye. Maybe in particular about being an actress. And as much as it’s a tribute to Marilyn it’s also about Ellen and Dakota. And even me.
