Viaggio in Italia (Journey to Italy)
Synopsis
Wealthy English couple Katherine and Alexander Joyce travel to Italy to settle an inheritance. Beneath the surface of their marriage lies a quiet estrangement: Alexander’s self-absorption has left little room for genuine intimacy.
As they spend time in Naples, each undergoes a profoundly different experience. Removed from the routines of home, the delicate equilibrium of their relationship unravels, and the prospect of divorce seems all but unavoidable. Alexander is too absorbed in his own concerns to notice the landscape around him, while Katherine’s solitary explorations gradually unsettle her. Just as their marriage seems beyond saving and divorce inevitable, they are swept together in the midst of a religious procession, finding themselves once more in each other’s arms—perhaps this time for good.
Director’s Statement
The things we do in life are not, unfortunately – I really do mean unfortunately – the product of reason alone. I think we are guided just as much by emotion as by intellect. And because chance is always at work in our lives – indeed, that’s what makes life so fascinating – there’s not much point in trying to reduce everything to a theory. That’s what stayed with me. So where could they possibly find each other again? What could bring them back together? The fact that they are utterly alone, strangers to everyone around them. It’s a terrible feeling, being alone in a crowd of people who are on a completely different wavelength. In every sense. It’s like being naked. And when you’re naked, of course the first thing you do is try to cover yourself.
