Anthony Nikolchev is the co-Artistic Director of The Useless Room, a movement-based experimental performance group in Los Angeles, and is on the faculty at the California Institute of the Arts School of Theater. He was born in 1986, raised in California’s Bay Area, and holds a dual degree in Theatre and an interdisciplinary degree in Biology and Philosophy from Wesleyan University, and has worked as a theatre artist predominantly in Central Europe (Poland), the USA (Chicago, Los Angeles), and the United Kingdom. He is an award-winning, critically acclaimed performer/writer/director between dance and theatre, film and live, including projects that range from his own solo work to experiential commercials.
His performance company, The Useless Room, co-run with Gema Galiana, has toured Europe, Asia and the USA, including commissions by Dance City in Newcastle, UK, presentations at La Biennale di Venezia, Summerhall festival at Edinburgh Fringe, The Theatre Olympics, and London’s Brixton House. Nikolchev and The Useless Room have led movement-based workshops for performers around the world, from Warsaw to Mexico to the USA to India. He is also on the director roster for the experiential commercial production company HELO, for which he directs major branded campaigns.
