The Souffleur

Synopsis
After thirty years managing an iconic hotel in Vienna, Lucius learns the building has been sold to an Argentine developer intent on demolishing and reimagining it. With the help of his daughter and a handful of loyal employees, he clings to the life he’s built. What follows is a crusade of detours, espionage, and a paranoid struggle to preserve a vanishing world — and the only home he’s ever known.
Director’s Statement
The tale of Lucius mirrors in a way my own, as a foreigner attempting to crystallise something which is fading in this world. Willem and I felt that working together would bring life to a rare creature that neither of us could create alone. From the very beginning, the challenge was to find where the film would land within the vast range that separates us. Sometimes I thought it’d be closer to him, others to me, but in the end it landed right in the middle, in the most dangerous zone. Narrative invention, for me, comes from a contrapuntal approach, where intuition weighs more than a traditional logic. A story that expands in multiple directions, like in a gaseous state, where the correspondences between the different layers of the film have the biggest importance. Just like polyphony, which can’t be tracked down to a solo singing voice, unexpected harmonics end up playing an important role in the film. The soundtrack honours a city that gave birth to modern music, embracing the capacity that only sound has, in its tangible yet abstract way of affecting an audience. Direct sound is very important to me, and we took extra steps on this production to create a more dynamic soundscape. At first sight, the film might seem classic in its narrative but, when taking a closer look at its tissue, it’s made of cinematic detail. The film moves towards the mud, the place of all creation.
