synopsis

Cover-Up is a political thriller that traces the explosive career of Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Seymour Hersh. Urgent and deeply reported, Cover-Up is both a portrait of a relentless journalist and an indictment of institutional violence — revealing a cycle of impunity in the U.S. military and intelligence agencies. Drawing on exclusive access to Hersh’s notes, and interweaving primary documents and archival footage, Cover-Up captures the power and process of investigative journalism.

directors' statements

"Cover-Up is a film about the cycles of impunity that lead to our present day, and the essential role of an adversarial press. I first approached Sy about making a film in 2005. I had just returned from documenting the catastrophic U.S. war in Iraq, and I wanted to make a film about the failure of the U.S. press post-9/11. Sy’s critical reporting on the war, especially torture at Abu Ghraib, was a rare voice of dissent in the media. Sy graciously invited me to his office on Connecticut Ave, where I entered a time-warp machine with gravity-defying yellow notepads stacked on every surface. I saw a movie in my mind. Sy said no. He had to travel to Europe to meet sources who lived down the street from him in D.C. and filming was too risky. I kept asking Sy until he finally agreed." (Laura Poitras)

"Reporter Seymour Hersh has a reputation as being a lone wolf. Yet somehow, we’ve been friends and occasional collaborators for over thirty years. The idea of making a film about Seymour has been germinating with me for years. It has become increasingly more urgent as the forces aligned against investigative journalism have mounted globally. Sy, in my mind, is an exemplar of what investigative journalism’s role is in questioning the powerful and in shaping history. Cover-up is a portrait of this iconoclast reporter and his singular place in the pantheon of American journalism." (Mark Obenhaus)
