synopsis

A pioneer of the Nouvelle Vague, rebellious and unconventional, Louis Malle defies categorization by genre or style. Freedom and independence have always guided his work, driven by an insatiable curiosity and an obsession with childhood and its wounds. If his cinema sparked so much controversy, it was because, with films such as The Lovers, The Fire Within, Murmur of the Heart, and Lacombe, Lucien, he was able to capture the spirit of his time, that of French society, its transformations, its customs, and its ghosts. His ten-year stay in the United States made him an international filmmaker, capable of reinventing himself in the mid-1970s. Upon his return to France, he directed Au revoir les enfants, a film haunted by his own history, which crowned his career. As told by Louis Malle himself, his life is a reflection of his work: romantic and exciting.

director's statement

When producer Vincent Sacripanti asked me to consider making a portrait of Louis Malle, I was familiar with his most famous films, such as Elevator for the Gallows, The Lovers, and Au revoir les enfants, but I had forgotten how diverse and committed his work was, and how it sometimes broke with the conventions of its time. I wanted to show a man in constant motion, a curious, unsettling filmmaker whose choices were sometimes controversial, who knew how to navigate between fiction and documentary, between France and the United States, between the intimate and the political. I met with his friends and family, collaborators, and I delved into his archives and films to understand what really drove his vision. I was struck by the filmmaker’s loyalty to the childhood trauma that haunted him throughout his life and guided his work. I chose to let him speak for himself, in his own words and through the emotions in his voice, recorded at different ages. I hope that my documentary will inspire people to rediscover Louis Malle, not as a frozen figure of cinematic heritage, but as a living, free, and deeply human artist.
