Synopsis

Sangre del Toro unfolds like Ariadne’s thread through an enchanted labyrinth, where each image is a symbol — a clue leading us back into the humanistic and monstrous universe of Guillermo del Toro. From his baroque hometown of Guadalajara to mysterious places in Paris, our Minotaur-like director, guardian of his artistic maze, personally guides us on an initiatory journey to solve some of the riddles of his films.

Director's statement

Mexicans have come to be known for their intimate relationship with death. But this affinity with death and the different ways it is expressed also stems from a cultural and spiritual syncretism between pre-Columbian heritage and Catholic colonial past.
As a Mexican director, Guillermo del Toro is no stranger to this cultural and ancestral legacy. So when he decided to present a large-scale art exhibition in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2019, I immediately understood that this would be the starting point for a unique exploration of his psyche. Based on his personal cabinet of curiosities bringing together his ex-votos from macabre films and religious relics linked to his childhood and formative years, the exhibition offered a glimpse to the mind of an artist obsessed by the figure of the monster and the representation of bodily sacrifice.
